The Hills of California Tickets - Jez Butterworth’s New Play

Olivier Award-winning writer of Jerusalem Jez Butterworth teams up with director Sam Mendes for the world premiere of The Hills of California at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Set in the 1970s, this story of two sisters who reunite to visit their dying mother is one of the hottest plays of 2024, and follows the powerhouse creative team’s triumphant The Ferryman. Don’t miss it in the West End for a strictly limited season.

About The Hills of California

Summer 1976 is the driest in 200 years, and in Blackpool the beaches are heaving. Every hotel is booked up, and it’s a glorious day out for holidaymakers and locals. But in the sweltering, close backstreets, where choc ices and donkey rides seem worlds away, the Webb Sisters have reunited. They are on their way to their dying mother’s run-down guest house for a final meeting.

Creative Team

The team behind this intimate family portrait are two of the biggest names in film and theatre. Jez Butterworth is a multi-award-winning playwright who wrote Jerusalem, widely claimed to be one of the greatest plays of the 21st century. His other works include The Ferryman and Mojo.

For his latest play, Butterworth resumes his partnership with Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty; Skyfall), whose stage credits include epic historical play The Lehman Trilogy. The pair previously collaborated on The Ferryman, which was the fastest-selling show in the Royal Court Theatre’s history and a runaway success in London and on Broadway.

Casting for the show includes Laura Donnelly (The Ferryman), Leanne Best (Sweat, Ripper Street), Ophelia Lovibond (W1A, The Effect) and Helena Wilson (Vogue World, Jack Absolute Flies Again).
