About the Westside Theatre
Westside Theatre, New York is an Off-Broadway venue with a celebrated history of hosting exciting new plays and musicals. This small but mighty theater is a fantastic place to enjoy some of the best entertainment in NYC, in an intimate setting.
The Neo-Romanesque building was originally a German Baptist Church, designed by architect Henry F. Kilburn and completed in 1890. It remained a place of worship until the 1960s, when it became a discotheque. Club Sanctuary remained open for four years between 1968 and 1972.
Chelsea Theatre Group swiftly picked up the building, and in October 1973 David Storey’s The Contractor was the first play produced at the renamed Chelsea Westside Theatre. It later operated as Westside Arts Theatre between 1981 and 1990, under producer Raymond L. Gaspard. During this time, productions on stage included Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune and March of the Falsettos.
Westside Theatre is currently managed by Reno Productions, Inc. and underwent extensive renovations before re-opening in 1991. Westside Theatre Upstairs’ inaugural production was Kander and Ebb’s And the World Goes ‘Round. It was the home of the second-longest running Off-Broadway production I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change between 1996 and 2008.
