What’s On at New Wimbledon Theatre

New Wimbledon Theatre has an exciting lineup of events for 2025, offering a mix of spectacular musicals, family-friendly productions, and timeless dramas. Fans of dance are spoilt for choice, with Riverdance’s 30th anniversary production Next Generation available to book now, as well as Matthew Bourne’s iconic Swan Lake ballet in October.

Further ahead, tickets are on sale for the UK tour of Fawlty Towers, created by John Cleese. Que, you say? That’s right, the sitcom is on stage and it’s as funny as ever! It’s a double dose of nostalgia too, with Sunny Afternoon, the Olivier Award-winning musical based on the formation and success of The Kinks, playing in November.

About the New Wimbledon Theatre

The New Wimbledon Theatre first opened in 1910 in South West London. It is a beautiful Grade II listed Edwardian building and after being refurbished twice, retains its original baroque features.

With a seating capacity of 1,670, the New Wimbledon is the eighth largest theatre in London and has often been used to premiere new musicals before they transfer to the West End. The inter-war and post-war years were hugely successful, and hit shows which first opened at the venue include Lionel Bart’s Oliver! and Half a Sixpence starring Tommy Steele. The theatre has also been a popular filming location, with annual televised Christmas pantomimes such as 2002’s Dick Whittington previously airing on the BBC and ITV.

After falling into financial difficulties in 2003, the New Wimbledon Theatre came under the management of Ambassador Theatre Group. Now well known for delivering a range of family events, touring musicals and an annual pantomime (previous guest stars include Jo Brand, Pamela Anderson and Ross Kemp), it remains one of the most prolific venues in London.

Close to transport connections, the theatre is near to a large shopping district, beautiful parks and the globally-celebrated tennis courts. The box office will open 90 minutes prior to performances.

The theatre is open up to 90 minutes before the first performance of the day begins. The ornately painted auditorium ceiling is worth taking the time to soak in before the performances, so try to arrive early.

There is a bar on the Stalls and Dress Circle levels of the theatre serving drinks and refreshments before the show and during the interval.

The Ambassador Lounge package is also available to book when buying tickets online.

There is no cloakroom at the venue. It is best to avoid taking any bags or items into the theatre that would be uncomfortable to hold during the performance.

Wimbledon High Street has a variety of chain and independent restaurants perfect for pre-theatre dining, and just 12 minutes’ away from the venue on the 93 or 200 bus routes. Fans of French cuisine should try local neighbourhood bistro The White Onion, whilst Thai Tho offers an extensive menu of Thai food including curries and noodle and rice dishes.

On Wimbledon High Street, pub and hotel Dog & Fox has 28 boutique bedrooms in their converted 19th century premises. Guests can enjoy comfortable accommodation and a friendly, laid back atmosphere. If your budget is more modest, a local branch of Premier Inn is three minutes’ walk from New Wimbledon Theatre.
