Shaftesbury Theatre

The four time Tony and two time Olivier Award winning musical, Memphis, is running at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre starring popstars Beverley Knight and Matt Cardle. Inspired by true events, the show is set in the 1950’s Memphis as “black” music begins to emerge to the mainstream thanks to the efforts of a local disc jockey, Huey Calhoun.

Beverley Knight and Matt Cardle star in David Bryan and Joe DiPietro’s Tony and Olivier Award winning musical, Memphis.

Based on the real life story of Dewey Phillips, a Memphis based DJ with a penchant for black music, the show highlights the early struggle of black artists and their fight to be heard.

Set in 1950’s Memphis, Tennessee, the show focuses on the relationship between disc jockey, Huey Calhoun and Felicia, the black singing sensation of club owner, Delray.

Huey loves Felicia’s sound and wants to promote her music. Having recently been fired from a department store for selling black rock 'n' roll music, Huey lands himself a job on the radio and begins to find an audience for the black sound. Managing to break many prejudices along the way, Huey begins a sexual relationship with Felicia, which not only complicates his mission to launch her to stardom but also brings out deep seated racial discrimination from both of their families.

Despite the serious subject matter, the show is also fun and vibrant, containing the upbeat original numbers “The Music of My Soul,” “Everybody Wants to Be Black on a Saturday Night,” “Make Me Stronger,” and “Memphis Lives in Me.”

As well as David Bryan’s celebrated score, the show also contains Olivier Award winning choreography by Sergio Trujillo, making the piece an all-encompassing musical theatre experience.

Memphis will be sure to have you on your feet dancing and clapping by the end of the show!
